Remember 2010?

It was the 100th Year Anniversary of Girl Guides in Canada!

It is STILL TRAVELLING 'round the USA!!!

And the latest geocacher to "grab" it, has said "We're going to place this in a special cache to celebrate Girl Scouts of America's 100th Anniversary in March. I'm holding on to it until 3/17/12 but will take it around so it gains some more miles. Maybe someone will pick it up to take to another country from there."

Be sure to check in once in a while and watch our coin as it travels!!

Our Unit was able to place a Girl Guides of Canada 100 Years Geocoin (thanks to our Junior Leader / Ranger!) in a cache to help celebrate our centenary.

The geocoin has travelled throughout Southwestern Ontario and through several U.S. states!

We hope our geocoin travels worldwide!!

Packing Tips for Camp

Camp packing tips

1. Have the camper pack her own bag.

If you really need to "help", choose the clothing and items to pack, lay them out and have the camper pack them. This gives her the opportunity to know what she has packed. More often than not, the items in the Lost & Found belong to a girl who didn't know her mom packed her some brand new tshirts, etc. that she had never seen before.

To "teach" your daughter to pack, have her pull out each item on the kit list. Once she has it all out, discuss what was a good choice and what was a bad choice. Then put together outfits for each day and we bag them in zip lock bags. The next camp, give her the list and have her let you know when it is all assembled so you can check it.

eg.
Bad choice = tank top; good choice = tshirt.
Bad choice = baseball cap; good choice = bucket/brimmed hat.
Bad choice = sandals; good choice = runners.

anecdote from an Ottawa Guide Unit:
One year, there was this absolutely gorgeous souvenir-type t-shirt no one claimed. Finally one girl said that her sister had one just like that last year. So I suggested she pack it to take it home and they could give it back if it didn't belong to them ... it was theirs.

2. Use zip lock bags.

Pack for each day ie: 1 ziplock = socks/undies/pants/shirt and label the bag with sharpie markers

3. Remember the importance of having the name on everything.

anecdote from a New Brunswick Guide Unit:
It's amazing how many pairs of underwear and socks go to camp alone. I have a visual image of all these panties and socks walking down the lane eager to go to camp. Yet at the end of camp they are too tired to go home and just end up in the garbage because no one claims them. Poor little things.

4. Choose a bag the GIRL can carry.

The bag should NOT be too big for the girl to carry by herself. Girls are expected to carry their own bags and gear from the vehicle drop-off area to the camp site.
anecdote from Ottawa summer camp volunteer:
Too many times we've seen Brownies arrive with a hockey bag with all their clothes and bedroll in it, and the bag is at least a foot longer than the Brownie is tall.

5. Helpful tip - order of packing inside the bag.

One thing you might find handy is to have the bag packed so that the Friday night stuff is on top (jammies, toiletries). Under that should be the bag for dirty clothes. Then what they expect to be able to wear when they get up in the morning (barring weather complications). Basically, the bag should be packed so that they just work their way down it. And bad weather gear would be better to try and fit it along the side of the bag so they don't have to dig out everything to find it.

Camps Adelaide, Doe Lake, Woolsey and Wyoka will fling open their doors for a chance for you to visit the property, speak with key staff and volunteers, try a summer camp program, make a craft and sample a snack! There is no charge so bring your friends, family and neighbours and come out and play GGC style!

Attend for six days of exciting camp activities! The theme this summer is meant to encourage girls to do their best and promote new experiences! Crafts, activities, and outings will be different each week, so girls are welcome to attend both weeks! Most days, the girls will participate in age specific program sessions including arts & crafts, sports, games, hikes and outdoor cooking.

July 17 - 22, 2011 - All age groups will come together for meals in a central area. We have two outings planned for this week which are: Fanshawe Conservation Area beach day with canoeing for Guides and Pathfinders and a visit to the Pioneer Village for the Brownies. We will also be going on an outing to a local pool to cool off!

August 7 - 12, 2011 - All age groups will come together for meals in a central area. We have two outings planned for this week which are: day trip to Rock Glen Conservation Area to climb and explore around rocks, find fossils and a beautiful waterfall, and have a picnic lunch. Will also be going on a second outing to a London pool to cool off!

Community Carnival Night - a Success

Our Community Carnival Night was a Success!

Just look at the fun everyone had!

Thank you so much to everyone that attended!

The Slushy Machine was SO popular!!

The girls worked hard at each of the stations - face painting, bowling, bean bag toss, balloon darts, ring toss, as well as at the 50/50 and raffles.

We were pleased to see the crowds come out - and we hope everyone that won a prize was thrilled!

Thanks to everyone that donated prizes for the raffles!! They were amazing!!

Film Cannister FLASHLIGHTS!

Tonight the girls made flashlights from film cannisters!

Anne found the instructions on the web years ago and put together instructions for all of us to keep.

Here is the supplies we used...

Here is a link to similar instructions courtesy of the GuideZone. We did not cut our containers like those instructions, but that is the only difference in instructions.

Now that digital cameras are so much more popular than film cameras, it will be hard to find film cannisters in the future!

• Twinning projects
• Mutual aid projects
• World Centers
• WAGGGS
• International travel

Our GeoCoin Started Its Journey!!

The 64th Guides went geocaching!

We placed a geocoin in a cache during our bike hike.

We had Frank talk to us for a bit about geocaching and he helped us to find the cache where we were going to place our geocoin.

Here we are holding the geocoin. The geocoin has been minted by Girl Guides of Canada to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Guides in Canada. Coins were made available to Rangers and Pathfinders and Kabrena, our Junior Leader (Ranger), and Katie, a visiting Pathfinder, helped us to start our geocoin on it's journey.

Here we found the cache!

We dropped off our geocoin here at the cache, to start it on it's journey.

Bike Hike - What an Adventure!

Our Bike Hike - What an Adventure!

This bike hike was one of the most adventuresome ever!

First a bike chain came off and we got that fixed.

Then a bike needed air in the tires so we got that done.

We had several girls fall off their bikes at different points in the trip ~ a few small scrapes but mostly no injuries at all thankfully!

We stopped in Gibbons Park to learn a bit about geocaching and to drop off our

100th Anniversary Girl Guide geocoin!!

All in all, we had beautiful weather, great girls and a wonderful ride!

The 64th London Girl Guides want to send a Shout Out to Great-West Life who provided us with a donation under their Volunteer Recognition Grant program.

Thank You!!

With this donation we were able to purchase new tents for the unit for our weekend camping adventures each spring. Thanks to Canadian Tire, too, who provided a discount price to us as members of a charitable organization so that we were able to purchase four tents instead of the two or three we had originally intended! And we bought waterproofing spray and tarps as well!

We were also very excited to take part in several of the 100th Anniversary celebrations ~ Girl Guides in Canada turned 100 in 2010!! Thanks to the Great-West Volunteer Recognition Grant we were able to attend the Kick Off celebration at Casa Loma in January 2010 ~ the grant paid for us to go by bus! Thanks Bobby for organizing the bus!!

And we really wanted to attend the Rally Day celebration at Ontario Place in May so the Great-West Volunteer Recognition Grant paid for our leaders to attend to accompany the girls! And we were able to buy special 100th Anniversary crests for each of the girls and leaders in our Unit as well. Thanks to Lesley S. for having them!

To celebrate our 100th Anniversary, the Ontario Council of Girl Guides of Canada introduced a special Centenary award ~ only 100 members would be chosen for this prestigious award. Two of our leaders received this award! The Great-West Volunteer Recognition Grant was used to pay the cost so all of the Unit leaders could attend the banquet where these awards were presented. At the same banquet, our Junior Leader received an Outstanding Youth Award as well!

As you can see, we fully appreciate the assistance provided by the Volunteer Recognition Grant and we thank Great-West Life for providing this program to their staff who volunteer and meet the criteria for the grant.

Girl Guides talk to the Space Station!

What can be cooler than talking to the Space Station?

Nothing!

Girl Guides of Canada held an international camp in Guelph Ontario with 2,500 campers from July 8-17, 2010.

On Friday July 16th, we contacted the Space Station via ARISS, (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) - the coolest 10 minutes of the entire camp experience!

Girls were pre-selected and once contact was made, the girls asked their questions and had them answered by Commander Doug Wheelock, an American astronaut currently on the Space Station.

Girl Guides of Canada has a special connection to space travel. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut, attended guiding programs in her youth and brought Girl Guide cookies into space with her.

- displays exceptional leadership qualities within Guiding and in her community at large; enthusiastically brings her personal talents and skills to Guiding.

- lives by the ideals of the Guiding Promise and Law; is a positive role model within and out of Guiding; actively promotes Guiding and its benefits.

- is well respected by her peers, Guiders and other members of the community.

The 2010 Centenary Award celebrates the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides. Only 100 Members in Ontario and Nunavut will receive this award which recognizes and celebrates Guiders and Rangers who exemplify the values and priorities we have had as an organization for the last 100 years. The 2010 Centenary Award recipients are Guiders/Rangers who:

- teach and mentor our girl and youth Members the skills required to become a good leader, within Guiding and their community

- enable and give the opportunity to our girl and youth Members to practice their leadership skills; through direct and indirect methods

- allow our girl and Youth Members to learn from their mistakes without judgement, while providing supportive guidance

- see the leadership potential in all of our girl and youth Members

- set an example and demonstrate their positive leadership within Guiding, and shares their skills with other Members

GGC Members and members of the public can take a 3-hour narrated walking tour of the camp, visiting all of the points of interest.

Guider of the Month Award

What's a Guider? That is the term used for a Guide Leader in Girl Guides of Canada. She does not have to be a Leader of just the Guide aged girls, she can be a Sparks Leader, or Brownie Leader, or a Leader at any level, basically any adult Member in Girl Guides of Canada.

The Guider of the Month Award gives girl and Youth Members the opportunity to nominate any adult Member of Guiding who has had a positive impact on their Guiding experience.

Reflective Arm Bands for Cookie Sales - a tutorial

Tonight we sold cookies door to door in the neighbourhood near where we meet.

The streets are crescents and they don't have sidewalks.

Anne, our treasurer, didn't think we were visible enough.

She thought we needed reflective arm bands.

We had a few safety vests donated to us.

But there were not enough for every girl.

So, this is what we did.

First, remove all the black bias tape around the vest - and save it, because we'll need it for the arm bands. That was Friday night.

Remove the cell phone pocket too, because it's in the way. And take off the velcro, too, and save it. That was Saturday morning.

Cut the vests so there is one inch of fabric on each side of the reflective tape.

Now sew the bias tape along the long edges of all those strips.

Next, cut the long strips into 3 smaller pieces. These will be the armbands.

That took the rest of Saturday.

Finally, sew bias tape and velcro to each end of each arm band.

That was Sunday's task.

And here is the result!!!

Safety first!!!

We did learn that we could have used more velcro on one half of each arm band to make them more adjustable down to smaller sizes. A few of the girls found that theirs was too loose. We'll add some more velcro to the arm bands before the fall cookie sales night. But - take note of Patti! We decided to put hers on her leg and it fit much better! :)

Girl Guides of Canada is launching You’re My Hero Girl Guides of Canada, a book by Girl Guides, for Girl Guides.

The book will celebrate all of the heroes that are important to you and is being produced in partnership with You’re My Hero Media.

Submit your hero story, and you could have it published in the book!

Every Girl Guide Member, from Sparks to Trefoil and alumnae, is invited to write and submit her hero story. (Sparks and Brownies can draw their story.)

Your submission can be about someone who has inspired you, challenged you, or who makes you feel like you can do anything – someone who is your personal hero.

It can be a friend, a relative, another Girl Guide Member, or anyone whose actions make a big difference.

Guiders, we need you to encourage girls in every branch to submit their stories/drawings! Click here or go to www.ymhggc.com/ymhgg for more information.

Girl Guides in Haiti

This year at our Thinking Day meeting we learned about Girl Guides in Haiti - the Association Nationale des Guides d'Haïti - how they are similar to our unit, and how they differ.

The Association Nationale des Guides d'Haïti was established in 1942 and they are part of the Western Hemisphere Region. The association is divided in four sections according to age:
Jeanette - ages 7 to 12
Guide - ages 12 to 15
Guide relais - ages 15 to 18
Guide aînée - ages 18 to 25

Casa Loma Craft - Chain Knot Tutorial

Everyone received this craft but not everyone had time to put it together.
The original instructions are at the end of this post.
Start by making the loop as shown here.
Now pull it all a little tighter, but still leaving a pretty big loop (1)there on the right.

Take your cord and make another small loop (2) and pull it through the big loop (1)

Now, make another loop (3) and pull it up through (2)

Now take a minute to tighten up all your loops a little bit. If you have enough cord, then make a few more loops, just like you did for (2) and (3), until you only have a little bit of cord left over.

Pull that little bit of cord through the last loop you made.

Voila! you are done!

Here is the original instruction sheet. Maybe the arrows in the pictures can help you some more.

Casa Loma Craft - GGC Key Chain

Casa Loma Craft - GGC Key Chain

Everyone received this craft but not everyone had time to put it together.
Here are photos of what your key chain should look like when it is completed.

Start by folding the yarn in half.
Loop it through the key ring.
Add your colour beads and lettered beads.
We put the letters in the order GGC for Girl Guides of Canada.
If you'd like to be a bit "retro", you could put them as CGG which is what was used 50 years ago in 1960 for Canadian Girl Guides.

I love the 100th Anniversary bead!

When you've added all your beads, make a knot so the beads don't fall off.

And you're done!

Hang it from your back pack, add to your camp hat, or pin onto your badge scarf - whatever you choose!

Casa Loma Craft - Guiding Sisters Pin

Casa Loma Craft - Guiding Sisters Pin

Everyone received this craft but not everyone had time to put it together.

When we picked up the craft, we were told that the instructions were backwards.

So here is a tutorial to make the Guiding Sisters pin!

First, put a clear crystal spacer bead onto the large safety pin.

Then add a smaller safety pin - see how the bigger safety pin goes through the little hole of the smaller safety pin?

Now repeat this until all the crystal spacer beads and smaller pins are on the larger pin.

Next, lay out all your beads so that the colours are together.

See the photo for help.

Start with the pink (Sparks) and put them onto the first small safety pin.

First put the pink sequin, then the wooden head bead, then the pink crystal beads.

Close the pin.

Repeat this with the orange/gold (Brownies).

Then the blue (Guides).

Then the green (Pathfinders) - wasn't it neat that we had Pathfinders on the bus with us! Here is a shout out to the 27th Pathfinders!

Finally do the red (Rangers/Junior Leaders). And yes, we had Rangers on our bus, too! Here is a shout out to the Ebramoll Rangers!

Canadian Guiding

This week we worked on our Canadian Guiding badge. We looked through the Canadian Guider magazine to find out what other units are doing across Canada. Some talked about camping and selling cookies, but one went dog sledding! We are attending the 100th Anniversary Kickoff Party at Casa Loma this weekend! It's going to be great meeting Guides from all over Ontario.

Casa Loma - SWAPS

What are SWAPs?

The "SWAP" was introduced into Boy/Girl Scouting/Guiding as a way to introduce one Scout to another. The swaps were traded and a conversation would result from explaining the swap. Many of these "SWAPS" started long friendships that lasted although the two swappers may have lived in different countries. A SWAP is usually, but not always,a small homemade item that represents the person, their community, or their background.

Would you like to make SWAPS for Casa Loma?

Here is a website with lots of great ideas:
http://www.gsswaps.net/ but keep in mind this is the Girl Scouts of the USA so their trefoil and logos will be different than Girl Guides of Canada.

SWAPS can be as simple as a penny glued to a piece of red fun foam cut into the shape of a maple leaf.

Or they can be much more complicated and time-consuming. The only real "rule" is that they be small enough to pin onto a camp hat, or keep in a ziplock bag, or pin to your backpack.

You can identify yourself by your first name, hometown, and Girl Guide unit. Adding the event is helpful to remember why you made this particular SWAP.

When we visit Casa Loma there will be Girl Guide members from all over Ontario. If you'd like to bring SWAPS please do.

This has made it difficult for planning these events, as we have had to make many last minute adjustments. Starting in January, we will no longer be accepting permission forms after their due date. First the girls were introduced to the Unit and made their Promise.

AHA! It is their Enrolment Pin inside a small baggie to keep it clean!!

After receiving her Enrolment Pin and her Certificate, the girls made the Girl Guide sign and handshake with each of their leaders and are now enrolled in the 64th Guides!

100 Years Ago Today - Crystal Palace

100 years today girls showed up at the Crystal Palace Rally for Boy Scouts.

Nesta Maude Ashworth was one of them!

She registered at Scout Headquarters by using her initials instead of her given names! She attended the Crystal Palace Rally in September 1909, with her friend, Rutha Orman, when they were sixteen years old.

Nesta wrote in her memoirs that Lord Baden-Powell came over to the group of girls and asked them who they were. "We're the Girl Scouts" they said, but he replied that there were no Girl Scouts. They quickly responded with "Oh yes there are, 'cos we're them!".

After B-P recovered from his surprise at seeing the girls at the rally, he asked his sister Agnes to organize something for the girls. Thus, Girl Guides was born.

The first Guide Company in Canada was in St. Catharines, Ontario. It was started by Mrs. A.H. Malcolmson. She travelled to England in 1909 and was at the Crystal Palace Rally. Back in Canada she registered the 1st St. Catharines Company of B-P Girl Guides and Agnes Baden-Powell, B-P's sister, signed the certificate.

Girl Guides were officially established in 1910 and will be celebrating 100 years in 2010.

Badge Testing

Badge Testing

Last week I was lucky enough to be able to do some badge testing to finalize some badges for the girls before year-end. Kaylin brought in some great work! I loved her outline (above) for a quilt block that is based on a tale.
She provided great level of detail in her drawing (left), and even has a clear piece that can be lifted to show the placement of the brain. Perhaps there is a future doctor in this young woman?
I'd love to show more work that the girls have completed this year. They've all outdone themselves with lots of solid commitment and lots of work to complete their badges this year!!
I was not always able to be the badge tester but I did get to see some of the presentations.

Golf!! A program for girls 7-18 years of age!!

Golf for GIRLS!!!

Thanks to Geraldine for sharing this information - her Guides have been taking part for several years now!

The RCGA CN Future Links Girls’ Club is a developmental golf program designed specifically for girls 7-18 years of age. The program is based on the premise that we can encourage more young girls to experience all of the positives the game of golf has to offer through the delivery of fun golf activities and learning environments in a “girls only” setting.

Girls' Club London was established in 2007 with an initial membership of 50 girls and grew to three groups of 40 girls in 2008 to become the largest organization of its kind in Canada. This year will be the same as last year with 3 different groups of 40 girls each, “headquartered” out of 3 top quality driving ranges here in the city. Instruction at each location is provided by certified CPGA Golf Professionals. There are 9 outings scheduled for each group and the cost is $115 plus a $15 RCGA registration fee for a total of $130.00, an exceptional value for all that is being offered.

Each group will meet at their “Home Base” range twice, visit the other ranges once, and experience on course play 3 times. In addition, all 3 groups will join together for our season end “Grand Finale” at Eastpark Golf Gardens for a Shotgun Scramble tournament, BBQ picnic and other fun stuff that Eastpark has to offer such as the waterslide, rock climbing, go-carts etc.

Registration is scheduled for 12:00 noon - 1:00pm, Sunday April 26th at The South London Community Centre (1119 Jalna Blvd., behind the White Oaks Mall).

You must visit our website at www.girlsclublondon.com to download the schedules and documents required for registration.

Applicants must complete all 4 parts of the "Player Application Kit", sign the "Parent / Guardian Agreement" and bring the completed documents along with your payment ($130.00 cash or cheque payable to Girls' Club London) to the registration session April 26th. If you have some flexibility, you may also indicate the order of your "Home Base" location preference. (ie. 1st-Bob Martin's, 2nd-Forest Glen, 3rd-Windermere etc.)

Girl Guides of Canada is excited to officially launch the “Canadian Girls Say…” photography project.

Although the 64th Guides will not participate as a unit (our meetings were already planned when this was announced), our girls are encouraged to participate in this groundbreaking project, which empowers girls to voice how they feel about their community through photography.

We hope that all our girls will be interested in participating in this fun and new project!

"Chinese" weaving

I don't know why this is called "Chinese" weaving, but that's how it is best known.

It is a popular activity with Girl Guides!

Great for free time at camp, a simple project to take along on a long trip, ongoing craft for meeting nights, or any other time an activity is needed.

Low cost for supplies (cardboard and yarn).

Small enough to take anywhere.

Easy enough for most girls Guide aged or older (approximately age 9 and up).

And, you can use cereal boxes for the cardboard! It's the perfect thickness for this activity!

Most of us know people who are trying to reduce their yarn stash, so it's possible to find yarn for little or no cost.

Tuesday March 24th we'll be meeting at the school and selling door-to-door in the neighbourhood.

Do you know how Canadian Girl Guide cookies started? In 1927, a Girl Guide leader in Regina baked and boxed up cookies for her girls as a simple way to raise money for uniforms and camping equipment. We're still going strong!

Did you know? GGC is proud to introduce a new reduced trans-fat classic cookie for the launch of the 2009 classic campaign. We have worked closely with our baker to reduce the trans-fat content of our classic chocolate and vanilla cookies by 90 per cent while maintaining the same great taste that Canadians love. As always, it is important to remember that cookies are a treat.

In 2010, Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) will be celebrating its 100th anniversary.

“Girl greatness starts here” is the theme for the centennial, showcasing GGC as the orginal girl driven organization. Plans are well underway for celebration activities throughout the year on a national, provinical and local level. Highlights include a national launch party, a national Rally Day, a national service project and our Guiding Mosaic 2010 camp.

There will be a special 2010 Celebrations section on http://www.girlguides.ca/ which will include a calendar of events, event descriptions and registration, Challenge descriptions and other 2010 news. Registration for our January 2010 launch party opens online in September. All provinces will also be holding their own launch events.

Thinking Day 2009

February 22, 2009 is Thinking Day 'round the world for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

In conjunction with Thinking Day, Siloam church held an interfaith service this evening. Guiding members from the 64th and the 65th London Guide Units took part in the "Seeking Spirit” service - part of which honoured the Baden Powells and the Guiding/Scouting legacy. This service was also a culmination of the Religion in Life activities that the church facilitated for Guiding members from the 2 Units.

Many thanks to Cindy, the Youth Minister at Siloam, for coordinating this evening and for all her work on the Religion in Life activities.

Thinking Day 2009

The World Thinking Day theme for 2009 is

girls worldwide say “stop the spread of AIDS, malaria and other diseases”

This theme is part of WAGGGS’ new Global Action Theme. At the 33rd WAGGGS World Conference in 2008, WAGGGS announced its new Global Action Theme:

girls worldwide say “together we can change our world”

which focuses on the Millennium Development Goals.

The theme encourages girls, young women and members of all ages to make a personal commitment to change the world around them.

Great Fun SKIING at Boler Mountain!

The girls had GREAT FUN at Boler Mountain and enjoyed skiing this year!

Each year, our unit alternates tubing and skiing at the Girl Guide event, and this year it was time for skiing.

Many thanks to Boler Staff for assisting to provide the girls with a wonderful evening - even the weather was perfect.

Boler requires that their consent forms be signed at Boler Mountain.

We can NOT drop them off to you ahead of time.

So, even though we said we hoped to do that, we cannot.

Parents who are carpooling: You will need to make arrangements with the person driving your daughter - you will need to give him/her permission to sign the consent form on your behalf.

Our Christmas Gift to you!

Free Instructions for a Paper Ornament...

We used to make these every year when I was young, and yes, that was many many years ago!

What you'll need:
- Paper - card stock - old Christmas cards (or I noticed today that my Diet Coke box has snowy decorations with polar bears, so even that would work!)
- something round - about 3 inches (7.5cm) across
- pencil
- scissors
- glue
- ribbon or yarn or string to hang
- (optional) hole punch to add ribbon

You will need 8 circles for each ornament.

1. Using your round object, draw circles on your cards and then cut them out.

2. On the back, you'll need to divide the circle so that there is a triangle remaining in the centre, and 3 "flaps" that will be folded and glued. It is really hard to describe, so please take a look at the pictures for an example.

3. Fold the flaps forward on each circle.

4. Glue a flap from 2 circles together.

5. Repeat step 4 to create a ball as in the pictures. (again, this is hard to describe, so I hope the pictures help to show you what you need to do)

6. As you are gluing, you can insert a ribbon (or yarn or string) between several circles at one point. Or, when the ball is completed you can use a hole punch to punch a hole for your ribbon.

7. Done!

Now you have a great use for those Christmas cards you've been saving all these years! and it doesn't matter if there is writing on the inside, because that is hidden inside the ornament!

YAY!

We did it! We sold ALL the cookies! Way to go!

Tuesday evening was very successful and all the cookies are now sold. Thanks to everyone for coming out for our neighbourhood sales. You all did a great job and represented Guiding perfectly.

Remember, our next meeting is with the Brownies - at their meeting place!

You'll be outside and even if you don't think you'll be cold, do us a favour and humour us! Wear warm toastie things!

Lipizzaner Stallions Sleepover - a success!

How else to describe the sleepover but a success!! Each of the girls actually got some sleep, too.

A quick review of the night: we arrived at Gate 1 and once everyone arrived, we made our way to our assigned sleeping area. We dropped off our gear and were then taken down to the seating area of the arena to see the Tack and groom clinic. One of the Lipizzaner stallions was brought out with two female riders and the announcer. They gave an excellent clinic.

Next, we made our way to the seats we were assigned for the World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions show - we had the front two rows in section 111! We had dinner while the audience began filling their seats. Soon there were over 600 Girl Guides, Brownies, Pathfinders, Rangers and Guide leaders in the stands at our end of the arena.

The show was started with Oh Canada - just the music. Soon, the voices of the Guides filled the arena - it was like an all-female choir was in the end bowl singing Oh Canada for all of those in attendance. It was a goosebumps experience.

And the show! It was great! The steps that the horses can do look so difficult, and the horses look so beautiful as they perform. It was truly like watching the horses perform a ballet.

After the show we saw the signs light up at either end of the arena "Girl Guides stay in your seats". So we did. Once the arena emptied, we were split into two groups. Our group went to the restaurant to complete a hemp friendship bracelet - the hemp was a bit short, so most decided they would be great keychains or backpack tags. We then moved into seats again to watch the movie Black Beauty and have some popcorn and a drink.

Our sleeping area was near Sections 312-313. We did sleep. Some more than others.

Once we were all packed up in the morning, we went back to the restaurant for breakfast. We were still pretty sleepy. We even had an extra hour to sleep because of the time change but it didn't help. Finally we gathered all our gear and carried it outside to meet our parents for pick up. Hm, how many went home to have a nap?

We will definitely do this again if we get the chance!
